The euroregional spur

Xavier Bernard-Sans

The Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion is the natural area comprising the territories of Catalonia, the Balearic Islands and the Occitania region in a structure of political cooperation. Although it was not administratively established until 2004, the inhabitants of these territories have cooperated throughout the years and centuries, from the Middle Ages until the present day. More importantly, although they have cooperated in all areas, they have done so especially in the cultural field. For example, we only have to remember that some of the best-known troubadours, such as Cerverí de Girona, were renowned on both sides of the Pyrenees and that they introduced the Provençal metric throughout Europe.

Therefore, as it shares a very rich past, a present such as this one and a future that necessarily converges in this structure of international cooperation, it is natural for the Euroregion to spur on the projects currently under way in the territory. In this sense, we can regard The Spur, headed by the Bòlit Centre of Contemporary Art in Girona, as an exemplary case. Thanks to the project, it has positioned itself at the forefront of contemporary art, once again promoting it from Girona, both at home and throughout Europe.

That said, we should not forget that the Euroregion and the Bòlit have cooperated since 2012, leading to a strengthening of their ties, particularly in the last two years –from 2016 to 2018– as a result of which we have been able to expand and, therefore, bring this initial European project to fruition.

The texts contained in this digital magazine constitute a significant selection of the results of the work. As you will see, it is a highly diverse collection, in which everyone reveals their roles. It has been a thorough and significant work, a well-accomplished task that we hope to continue in the future. As if they were seeds, we hope that these texts germinate in the spirit of the project’s partners, so that we can expand our circle of partners and go even further. The Euroregion will thus be built on a basis of culture and, at the same time, culture will be furthered by our institution.
